Training and Development
Besides providing on-the-job Training and in-house training, we also grant training sponsorship to our staff so that they are enriched with relevant job knowledge, capable of dealing with new challenges and climbing up the career ladder in our company.
With an aim in training & nurturing maritime professionals for industry succession, TurboJET established a cadet-training scheme in 1998.
A TurboJET Cadet must be a graduate from the VTC Maritime Services Training Institute Higher Diploma in Maritime Studies course and hold the Seafarers Employment Registration Book which is issued by the Hong Kong Marine Department.
The Cadet will go through 12 months practical training in order to be eligible for sitting the examination of Certificate of Competence (Deck Officer) in River Trade Class 3. The first six months training, which take place in the shipyard office, includes maintenance of life saving appliance, e.g. life jackets, fire extinguishers etc; maintenance and updating charts so as to ensure sea channels are clear and safe for navigation. The second six months training, which take place onboard vessels, includes deck-hand training in mooring operation and navigation training by the Master and Chief Officer in the bridge for navigation duties and watch-keeping, e.g. the use of navigation equipment.
When the Cadet successfully awarded the Class 3 Certificate, he or she will go into the Night Vision Officer Training and sit for the Type Rating Certificate examination (TRC). When the Cadet passes the TRC, he or she will then become a qualified Night Vision Officer. His or her duties are to monitor the Night Vision System and assist in navigation in the bridge and assist in the passenger embarkation and disembarkation in the cabin.
Along the career ladder, after 27 months of sea time, the Night Vision Officer is eligible for sitting the Class 2 examination. When he or she succeeds in the examination, training continues for the Night Vision Officer to pass the TRC for becoming a qualified Chief Officer. His or her duty now is in a higher level to be in charge of the shipboard operation and navigation.
When the Chief Officer accumulated another 24 months of sea time and shipboard operation and navigation experience, he or she could sit for the Class 1 examination. The Chief Officer will possess a Master's qualification when he or she passes the examinations. Again, the training scheme continues and the Chief Officer would be promoted to a Master at suitable time to be the overall in command of the vessel.
